Flowers in the Front Hall of The Savoy London

Flowers are vitally important to any hotel and form an intrinsic part of any guest experience in my humble opinion.  Flowers epitomise beauty and spectacle, perfume and romance so I love taking photographs of the florist’s art – especially in luxury properties where the budgets are higher and the flowers more extravagant.

I took this image of the tulip arrangement especially for Flower Friday in the Front Hall of The Savoy London and love it for its spring-like properties and simplicity.  Here’s some fun facts and a couple of tips from Belinda Bowles, Head of Floral Design at The Savoy:

  • Number of flowers put into guest rooms per annum – 500-1,000 stems a week depending on VIP’s
  • Number of blooms used throughout the public areas – 1,500 stems a week
  • The choice of flower design must complement Edwardian traditional English flowers or Art Deco modern orchid designs
  • The most romantic floral gesture ever requested at The Savoy was for a small heart shaped pillow of red roses with an engagement ring placed on top for the gentleman to propose at the River Restaurant (now Kaspar’s Seafood Bar and Grill).
  • Top tip:  If you are unfortunate to get lily pollen on you, do not rub as this will stain.  Instead, dab delicately with a little Sellotape to lift the pollen.
  • Top tip:  With hydrangea stems, ensure you cut on an angle and cut up the stem too – this ensures the flower can drink – water mist spray the flower heads too as hydrangea drink through the flower bloom.
